Folded Spools, part II

That’s how it looks like after the first seam is done. The turquoise “rectangle looking piece” is going to be the folded center square. Don’t press at this time!

Flip the two triangles as shown face to face to the center (sorry, my English isn’t good enough to explain each step correctly). I do hope the pictures will bring some light ....

after you sewed the first two, opposite seams – you see, there was no pressing done.
Open the “box” and concentrate to the left side. Bring the upper and the superior edge in the center together nicely, pin it across, follow the line and secure with another pin.
Sew from the edge to the center, stop ¼ “ from the corner!
Continue on the 4th side.

Sewing is done,

please iron it carefully now:
clockwise or in the opposite direction WiTHOUT pressing the folded center square!
We don’t want to have it flat at the end

Now it is pressed, from the back the center is folding like a little 4 patch

Cut the “ears” – READY

Folded Spools

My newest project was born yesterday with the little help of EQ.
I’m a fan of folded fabrics, so I designed a little wallhanging showing 6 different spool-blocks. Each block is 4” finished, that’s a total of 28” at the end.
Monika, my best friend living in the lovely village Lüneburg and I planed to start this project during the last week of August, when I’m her guest for one week.
But I couldn’t wait and started today.

To sew half-square triangles I love to work with The Angler 2. Please visit http://www.pambonodesigns.com, they offer several Videos, which shows perfect how to use it. Did I mentioned before that I love good notions?

My first spool is done like a BOW TiE block with two half-square trianlges on two opposite places with a folded center.

I’ll show the details of making on the second block. The only difference is that this block is made with 4 quarter-square triangles and the center square. You may variate the measurement of the center to get different spools ;-)
To insert the folded square there are two methods to do this block. If you prefer to sew by hand, you may give it a try to sew clockwise or counterclockwise. By sewing with machine it is easier to do the two opposite sites first. Sounds complicate, but I hope the pictures will show, what I’m unable to explain clearly.

Start with this 5 pieces, in my example the finished block is 4”. So cut two 5 ¼ squares twice diagonaly: one of the background and of the spool fabric (brown). This way you get the fabrics for two blocks. The center fabric (thread color) is 4”, but it is variable. I choose plain fabrics or Marbles, handdyed – to show the thread.

This is the first step: fold the center square from bottom to top (left side to left side), place it on top of the right side of the upper left trianlge as shown.
Flip the upper right triangle (brown) on top of it to the left side.

ATTENTION: don’t sew into the seamallowence in the center of the block, otherwise you wan’t be able to iron the block clockwise (or counterclockwise). But that’s nessecary to lay the center flat.

The 5 drawers are from IKEA, named "Malm", made with birch-tree-veneer.

And I'll get the 6th one this month! I have to confess ;-)

13 ladies from the Dear Jane Group namend "Ruhris" presented me each a black/red block when we met in June in Essen in Sigrid's garden. Firstable I was confused how to set 13 blocks, but thanks EQ I got it and this is my first sewing I did in Szczecin.

I am back on earth

after a long time of silence - here I am again.
In the meantime we moved, tue to the NATO duty of my DH, to Szczecin/Poland, where we rented a house for the following ~ 2 years (+?)

It took 2 weeks, 2 big trucks with trailers, ~ 400 boxes and a lot of menpower to bring our household to the new place.
A big THANK YOU to the men of the Jöns company!

The house is half of a formerly bigger house and the best of it is: drumroll please MY STUDiO. You see the two windows side by side? Thats the place where I am now sitting (looking to the northern side).

The room is shaped like the letter U, so it feels like 3 rooms ;-)

When I'm sitting at the PC table I'm looking to the threadle with the doll from my childhood and the big drawer from an old storage. On my left side I see the lovely Ackermann's thread cabinet.

Here you see my sewingplace and the window showing to the East, which means sun in the morning. Right of my machine is a (usual used as) kitchen cupboard, just the right height for cutting to me! IKEA just offered this nice little ironingboard.

The other part of the room you will see tomorrow, today I had too much trouble to bring the pictures to that place I wanted. Seems I have to do it daily to get better on it :-)

SURPRISE - never ending

today we moved DD (Ines) furniture and washingmaschine into her first own flat with the help of Angelika's husband and son - like I said before: FRiENDSHiP !!

AND she surprised me again with a cute selfmade strawberrybaer. The German translation is: "Erdbär" (strawberry=Erdbeere)

Two years ago we both made a bear together, mine traveled with DH to Afghanistan. Now she did a red bear with tiny embroidered knots and a green hat for me - it is a darling !!!!!!!

I am totally speachless!

Yesterday my little quiltgroup (of 4) celebrated my last participation of the monthly meeting.

We met at Gaby's home, she opend in a Bengali dress (she is married to Salek -35 years now-, he is from Bangladesh) and she offered first a delicious raspberry/eggnogg cake - hmmmmmmmm and in the evening a very special FANTASTIC Bengali dinner - GREAT

between both meals Gaby presented a departure present to me:

a quilttop!!!! cream-on-cream with plaids from Lunghis's (cotton dresses men wears in Bangladesh) - I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!

Afterworth the 3 other ladies presented me a very flat ~ 20" package ........... wrapped in violet paper and it is

I was totally overwhelmed and speachless, it is a BEAUTY!!!!!!!!!

Angelika, Brigitte, Inge and Ute worked each a quarter, they talked about how long it took: each women worked about 40 - 45 hours to stitch it for me

BTW: I moved to this city nearly 4 years ago, so we know each other not the whole life ....

I forgot to introduce my friend Caroline, SORRY - here we are (she is the lady with dark hair)

isn't it amazing how different the same quilt looks like?

Do you want to see my "new" -in fact: old- Threaddrawer my husband bought on ebay for my new studio in Sczcecin? It was built in ~ the twenties, so it's nearly 100 years old. Some refreshing is needed - but my thread will love the new drawer :-)

Visit from Belgium

First I have to ask for your excuse about my long silence!
I had been so busy with traveling between Sczcecin / Poland and Düsseldorf / Germany because my husband started working there in October last year and we (DD and the dog) left at the old place. The distance between both cities is about 760 Kilometers / 475 miles ........
This way my daughter (Ines) was able to finish her last months in school before she starts her education in July here. The trip takes about 8 hours each, no matter if I travel by train, car or plane + train.


The good news is: we rented a house in Sczcecin with a fantastic studio for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you will see pictures - I promise!



Now I'm in the middle of helping Ines to get settled in her first own flat and to be prepaired for our own move. Two big trucks will arrive on June 2oth to pick up our household.





To spent two days with me sewing and to say GOOD BYE Caroline from Belgium came over and helped me to get started with our group project. I'm member of the Caravanquilters (a Yahoogroup), a group which meets each other in Shipshewana/Indiana twice per year during the Dear Jane Retreat - a lovely place in a small Amish village.





The group started to sew the Postcard Quilt of Kaffee Fassett's book: Quiltroad. The only common fabric is one of the Paperweight series, each of us choose her own color and added fabrics from their stash or ordered coordinating fabrics if "nessecary" (you know: every excuse it welcome to visit the LQS).

We had a lot of fun and I got the center and the first two borders done, started the flying geese border also. On her way back to Brussels we went to my favorite quiltshop in Mönchengladbach, namend "Stofflust". Unfortunatly the shop was still closed when we arrived so we had to take a cup of icecream near bye .............


Isn't it interesting, how the impression changes after the next row is added.
At least this is going to be a quilt with a lot of power in it ;-)

I promise, I'll write permantently after my move. I visited my favorite bloggs and got a lot of ideas and input

Merry Christmas

dear Blog-visitors,
after some weeks of silence here
I want to wish a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year
to you and your families
I hope there might be more peace on earth

During the last three months I traveld several times between Szczecin and Düsseldorf (740 km distance, that's ~ 450 miles)
My holiday preparation was very late this year because of this circumstance
But my lovely daughter Ines (18) was very helpfull, so we got everything done just in time.
My DH Peter arrived yesterday evening by car with a bad flu :-)

Today the only I have to do is to wrap some little gifts, some new candles here and there - that's it. We change the gifts right after eating some cake or cookies at ~ 5pm
one after other will be opend, so each of us can enjoy the surprise
In the evening we are eating potatosalad and sausage - traditional in my family (and many German families) - totally stressless

To give you an impression - here is our collection of little angels playing music, produced in the former German Democratic Republic











Please excuse that my card-writing wasn't as good as I planned, some of you may miss my card, sorry for that, but you where in my thoughts!!!

first impressions

My first trip to Szczecin / Poland went much better than we hoped. Weather was nice - everbody knows how important that is for feeling well :-)
The wife of the former senior officier showed me the town and we visited the big shopping mall "Galaxy" and spent a nice time in "Cafè 22". It is located at the 22th floor of the Radisson Hotel and we had a fantastic view over the town. My first step into the Polish market scene was very interesting and I loved the mushrooms and vegetables - yummy
Two invitations later we collected some experiences from our hosts.
A visit in a Polish restaurant - a real log cabin!- was delicious.
Today we visited a house, we want to rent afer my move. We felt in love immediatly!
It is built in 1900 and in a very good shape and good located.

life got in the way

dear visitors,
DH move to Szczecin/Poland last week and my preparation to visit him on Thursday took much more attention (and power) than I expected.
YES, I did some beading together with my friend Sabine - but not enough for the ideas I have in my mind after the BEADING RETREAT at the first weekend of October.

That's my first try with the Swaroski "Rivoli" framed in Square-Stitch. Thank you Regine, your instructions are GREAT!



The bracelet is the result of a Right-Angle-Weave-workshop I visited by Mara.

Just a quick note, to let you know: I'm still alive ;-)
This week has been very busy with several office duties, my husbands last week here in Düsseldorf took attention. Last but not least I spend one day at Regine's home, together with Sabine and Iris and we "fighted" with very tiny beads. It was my first try to crochet a little ball, I do have experience with crochet (in the round and flat) but to start with only 5 beads and to double them in the second row with "nothing" in your hand is really hard -
BUT at the end I did it with sucsess.
Today I leave for the weekend to spend a funny time with about 35 women, all bead influenced.
Tuesday is the day, my husband travel to Poland to start his new job there.
So Monday will be busy with getting packed.
please be patient, you will see pictures at least on Tuesday with fantastic beadjewelery, I'm shure.

tired, but lucky

We got up at 5.15 am and reached the fleamarket at 7.3o am. That's very, VERY early for me - just for the reader, which don't know me in person ;-))
But you know: the early bird ..........

this fleamarket is located under a train, which is hanging under the construction, as you see here. Special feeling, to stand on the street AND to sit in the train (we tried both - smile)

At the end we both returned very lucky. My husband got a paraffin lantern, used in the past from workers showing the traindriver to stop

2 glasses for egg-flip, special cleaning clothes, 2 old books (one with Goethe's colortheory and the other with lovely illustrated fairytales) ended in our house also
